At DigitalMe we’ve been up to all kinds of things in the background for Go2B and we’ve been trying new and innovative things on our Open Badge Academy platform too.
Badging Malmö – A Learning Adventure
Kevin is a little bit badge obsessed so.rather than enjoying his holiday in beautiful Sweden he decided to see if he could create a badge challenge. It was a bit of a trial to see if it could work as a way for exchange students to develop inter-cultural skills & knowledge but in a fun and dynamic way. The idea needs ‘tweaking’ and developing further but you can see his 1st efforts here.
Wouldn’t it be great if an exchange coordinator in one country created one or more of these for students visiting on an exchange? Mobile phones as a tool for learning and evidencing that learning through badges. The possibilities!
Deal – Talking between Erasmus + Programmes
Kevin went back to his roots in Birmingham to join 30 + people from around Europe, working with young people in formal and informal settings. Why? To look at best practice in the field of employability skills for young people. Did he mention Go2B and the badging programme? Of course he did!
As part of those discussions, he spoke about the Go2B project and it’s ability to showcase young people’s skills to potential employers. The very work that our Lead Partners, Hans & Nicole are looking at through the Brainport network. We’ve also a few other Brainport employer developments around badging to talk about but we’ll leave that to Hans and Nicole to introduce.
Open Badge Community Call – Our Friends at Badgecraft
As DigitalMe (now part of the City & Guilds Group) & Open Badge Academy we’re really open to working with other badging platforms and discussing the application of badges around the world. This is one of the reasons we take part in the open badge community calls.
In the last call we bumped into Badgecraft (again), based in Lithuania who are currently looking at a project around badging European volunteering. It was great to hear them talk about how they’re using badges to promote and support European mobilities. It also gave Kevin the opportunity to introduce Go2B to an international online audience.
As Badgecraft’s mobility work is a natural follow-on from Go2B, we’ll be keeping in touch with them to see how we can work together in the field of young people, European mobility and badges.

We’re Matt and Kevin, we’re from DigitalMe based in Leeds in the UK. We’re ‘chuffed to bits’ to be working on the Go2B project and think we’ve got some really great partners to make it all happen.
It’s taking a lot of though power from us all to badge a programme (skills and learning) that doesn’t fit easily into obvious categories like, for example, badging something such as ‘digital skills’. These are obviously more clear-cut whereas badging soft skills or capabilities is much more of a challenge. But we’re getting there and the Helsinki partner meeting was a huge leap forward in understanding thanks to much of the work that Globi have done around the intercultural competence model.
Dissemination or promotion of Go2B is obviously one of our key shared project outcomes. We see the creation of the Recognised Provider Academy and the Healthcheck tool as really important methods for Go2B to self-promote itself in the future. The Healthcheck tool especially as a ‘teaser’ for the Go2B programme. So we’ve been cracking on with that, to be unveiled very shortly (just needs the gloss paint adding!).
We’re lucky at DigitalMe, because ourselves and our sister organisation, Makewaves have been working with schools for a number of years. This means we can tell thousands of schools about Go2B through our monthly newsletters. We’ve only used this so far to call for UK partners but now we’re getting a much clearer picture of what Go2B looks like, we’ll soon be in a better position to really promote the project using our newsletters and social media accounts!

We had a cunning plan to not only help Hans and JvB track Go2B Awareness but also to introduce people to the concept of badges. What we’re going to do is create a Go2B Aware badge that can be issued via email where we have spoken to a person in a given organisation. Clever huh? There’s loads of ways you can use badges and tracking engagement is one of them.
